Taking Off

October 10, 2010

Departure Lounge, the musical about four 18-year-old lads stuck in Malaga airport, is the latest fringe hit to land in London. Having wowed the Edinburgh crowd two summers ago (with an original cast featuring Parade’s Stuart Matthew Price) as well as New York’s Summer Play festival, it transferred to the Waterloo East Theatre at the end of September. Starring Chris Fountain (yup, the one that hooked up with his teacher, Burn the Floor‘s Ali Bastian, on Hollyoaks – they’re everywhere!) as well as Inbetweeners and Emmerdale alumni, I think we can safely say the DL team are going for some serious pop culture appeal. The show has already received a rave Twitter review from Theatreland’s national treasure Julie Atherton:

@Julie_Atherton Evryone should go and see Departure Lounge at Waterloo east theatre! So slick, hilarious, touching, choreography & direction is perfect….

@Julie_Atherton …cast r GREAT especially @MrStevieWebb and jack shaloo! cracking tunes. Go see it, especially if u think u don’t like musicals! Go now!

But what if you think you do like musicals? Here’s hoping this isn’t just a stepping stone from theatre philistine to bona fide luvvie. Do comment with your thoughts on the show, and hopefully I’ll get down there to review it soon.
